The DMA-80 direct mercury determination device manufactured by MILESTONE is suitable for the direct determination of total mercury from both solid and liquid samples. No wet chemical sample preparation process is required! Measuring a sample takes 5-6 minutes (liquid 6 minutes due to evaporation). By filling the device's 40-place sample changer with a solid sample, it can perform the analysis of all samples fully automatically in approximately 4 hours. Thanks to the computer control, it is possible to fully document the analysis.
More details
The solid or liquid sample must be weighed directly into the boat. The sample is first pre-dried in a continuous stream of oxygen and then burned in the same place. The resulting combustion products undergo further decomposition in the catalyst furnace and then leave the system. The mercury vapors released during the burning of the sample are bound on the cold gold amalgamator, and after the amalgamator is heated - evaporated from there - they enter the built-in atomic absorption photometer.
Thanks to this technology, the analysis is matrix-free!
Mercury is quantified at 253.65 nm.
The graph shows a typical measurement where two peaks are visible: the first (higher) signal comes from the long cell, in which total mercury between 0.02 and 20 ng can be determined.
The second signal comes from the short cell, which can measure between 20 and 1,000 ng of total mercury. The device measures total mercury, which the software converts into concentration. The software also measures the height of both peaks and the width of the peaks at half height, which helps with method development and error limitation.
The TRICELL device has three measuring cells and two detectors. The lowest range measuring cell measures between 0.0015 ng and 10 ng..
